Whole-rock oxygen isotope ratios as a proxy for the strength and stiffness of hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks

چکیده

Hydrothermal alteration is considered to increase the likelihood of dome or flank collapse by compromising stability. Understanding how such influences rock properties, and providing independent metrics for that can be used estimate these parameters, therefore important better assess volcanic hazards mitigate risk. We explore possibility using whole-rock ?18O ?D values water contents, potentially track alteration, strength (compressive tensile) Young’s modulus (i.e. “stiffness”) altered (acid-sulphate) rocks from La Soufrière de Guadeloupe (Eastern Caribbean). The range 5.8 13.2‰, ? 151 44‰, content 0.3 5.1 wt%. find there a good correlation between laboratory-measured modulus, but parameters do not vary systematically with (likely due their pre-treatment at 200 °C). Empirical linear relationships allow estimated are provided our new data published Merapi volcano (Indonesia). Our study highlights rocks, could provide stability modelling. One advantage this technique only requires small amount material, property estimates in scenarios where material limited, as borehole cuttings when sampling large blocks impracticable.

Mechanisms of arsenic and lead release from hydrothermally altered rock.

This paper describes the effects of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), redox conditions, and mixing ratio of different rocks on the leaching behaviors of As and Pb from hydrothermally altered rock as well as the functional groups incorporating As and Pb in the rock. Most of As and Pb were incorporated in the residual or crystalline phase although significant amounts were also determined to be exchangea...

Isotopic analysis of mineral phases to unravel the origin of altered volcanic rocks: an example from the Leucite Hills lamproites

Study of lamproites from Leucite Hills, Wyoming, indicates that the isotopic compositions of some specimens have been modified due to the alteration and/or the presence of secondary carbonate impurities within the whole rocks. Leachate test shows that while phlogopite lamproites are not affected by secondary processes, the transitional madupitic lamproites from Middle Table Mountain and on...
